A paralympic swimming hero has called plans to build to build an eight-lane pool in Perdiswell ‘great news for the Worcester area’.

Sascha Kindred OBE backed the decision of Worcester City Council to approve a new 25m pool at Perdiswell Leisure Centre last Tuesday (September 30).

The six-time Paralympic champion hailed the £10.45million project at the Bilford Road site and told The Observer he believes the city can now become more competitive in the sport.

“There’s a big difference between a six-lane and an eight-lane pool,” he said.

“It gives more opportunities for multi-purpose use, you can have lane swimming as well as public lessons all going on at the same time.

“Also, from a swimming club environment it hopefully increases numbers for the club and makes them more competitive and will get more people involved.

“In Worcester you’ve got some great sports, from the rugby to Worcester Wolves basketball, so to have a quality eight-lane pool – which will attract more competitions – is great news for the Worcester area.”

The pool is expected to be open by 2016.
