National Arena League Final, Nuneaton, Saturday 12th December 2015

Worcester Swimming Club rounded off 2015 in brilliant style by claiming its best ever finish in the National League, sponsored by Arena Competing in the West Midlands regional Final (premier division) for the second consecutive year… a first for the Club… the swimmers excelled themselves, earning joint 3rd place tied with Boldmere, and not all that far behind Midlands’ heavyweights Derby and Coventry.

The final points were

Derby 215,

Coventry 208,

Worcester and Boldmere 169,

Braunstone 154,

Halesowen 131.

Without exception, every swimmer performed superbly… though such was the standard of swimming that only Olivia Fletcher and Will Gearey managed a first place finish! Having to wait until events 37 & 38, the pair splendidly won their back-to-back 13/under 100m Freestyle races to the delight of the rest of the team.

Consistency was the key though with so many swimmers producing Personal Best times and grabbing an extra point for the team by getting the better of their rivals in close finishes In the 11/u age group, Daniel Day and George Glover yet again underlined their potential with strong second place finishes… before being joined by Oliver Foster and Daniel Kearley to take 2nd in an enthralling Medley Relay In the 13’s, there was more success… with 2nd place finishes for Jenny Gearey (Backstroke), Matthew Richards (Backstroke and Butterfly) and Aaron Cook (Breaststroke)… whilst Will and Matt teamed up with rapidly improving Louis Doyle and Isaac Shepherd to finish 2nd in the Freestyle relay In the 15’s, Sam Hall continued his rich run of form but still had to settle for 2nd in an amazing 100m Breaststroke race whilst Lucy Clayton showed her class too to take 2nd in the equivalent Open age group ladies’ event.

Above all, though, this was a typical Worcester team performance with arguably the whole greater than the sum of the parts… united and determined, every swimmer fighting for every point The full 39-strong team was Becky Yates, Aimee Monks, Bryony Lowe, Lottie Martin, Jenny Gearey, Olivia Fletcher, Leyla Tayar, Josie Armstrong, Lottie Trevethan, Hattie Goff, Charlotte Yates, Yasemin Tayar, Charlotte Hall, Emily Stancer, Sophie Groves, Lucy Clayton, Samantha Gearey, Emma Lovesey, Tabitha Monkhouse, Eloise van Vuren, Daniel Day, George Glover, Oliver Foster, Daniel Kearley, Matthew Ricahrds, Aaron Cook, William Gearey, Louis Doyle, Sam Hartley, Isaac Shepherd, Kai Gooden-Morris, Sam Hall, Robert Latta, Mike Adair, William Hadley, Anthony Redfern, James Marsh, Ben Holmes and Joel Smith…  all of them can be immensely proud of their achievements.
